Resident Return Visa

A Resident Return Visa (RRV) allows current or former Australian permanent residents and former Australian citizens to travel overseas and retain their permanent resident status. It essentially acts as a bridge between your existing permanent residency and your return to Australia.

There are two main types of RRVs:

  • Subclass 155: This visa has a travel facility of up to five years from the date of grant, allowing you to travel freely outside Australia without losing your permanent residency.
  • Subclass 157: This visa has a travel facility of up to three months from the date of grant. It’s primarily meant for situations where you need to make a short trip abroad and plan to return soon.

Here are some key things to know about RRVs:

  • Eligibility: You must meet specific criteria to be eligible for an RRV, including:
    • Having held a permanent resident visa when you left Australia.
    • Having spent two out of the last five years residing in Australia as a permanent resident (unless there were compelling and compassionate reasons for your absence).
    • Not having been absent from Australia for more than five years (unless you have substantial business, cultural, employment, or personal ties that benefit Australia).
  • Application process: You can apply for an RRV online or through a paper application. The processing time can vary depending on your circumstances.
  • Fees: There are application fees associated with RRVs.
  • Conditions: RRV holders must comply with certain conditions, such as maintaining their permanent residency and notifying the Department of Home Affairs of any changes in their circumstances.
